lyrics

If behind every Nobel is a great teacher
what can we surmise from the smooth hate-preacher?
Nobody taught me how to lie or despise, I believe,
but pedagogy goes a little further, we can see.

They say and we repeat that all are equal,
but all things being equal is a caveat.
And life would be a dull game if we had a common goal,
just riding on the banker's baccarat.

And I wouldn't say that I could lead a court room,
but at some point I'll call a beard a spade.
No, it's not a easy thing to sit in judgement,
but we're dealing with the details every day.

We fall to speculation — where does it come from?
Unfashionable to blame the original.
If everybody sweetens — you get to know them —
participant observation is impossible.

We see the pictures printed and condemn the general view
(but for individual circumstance of course we can excuse)
and we have to send a message, but omit to state for whom,
and recall the details wildly in the future to exhume —

And standing on a soapbox I forget how I got there,
feeling like an idiot to believe that a world would care;
vocabulary dressing up the dreams of a child,
prestidigitation to conceal an optimist in self-denial.
